Christ of the Abyss is an 8 1/2 foot, 4000 pound bronze sculpture of Jesus Christ created by the Italian artist Guido Galletti to commemorate the death of a diver. Three statues were cast from the original mold. One of them was presented to the Underwater Society of America. In 1965 the statue was placed in the waters of Key Largo, Florida, 25 feet under the surface. Christ of the Abyss is one of the most famous and popular sights in the only underwater park in the world, John Pennecamp Coral Reef State Park. The beauty of the sculpture is accentuated by the eerie, other-worldly quality of its surroundings. With his hands outstretched in an offering of peace to divers and marine life, the work is a statement of profound religious feeling, that the Word reaches to the darkest, coldest, emptiest depths. Non-divers can see a bronze replica, in front of the St. Justins Martyr Catholic Church nearby, on US 1.
Shore Thing commissioned Peter Agardy to capture the beautiful and inspirational quality of the scene in a painting. A diver, shark, and other creatures add to the silence and beauty, creating a composition that highlights the sculpture.
We use a challenging nine color screen printing process to faithfully reproduce Agardy's art. The shirts themselves are the best quality available. They're made of preshrunk 100% ring-spun cotton, in a high stitch density fabric. They have shoulder-to-shoulder taping, a double-needle cover-seamed neck, and double-needle sleeves and bottom hems. The long sleeved shirts have rib-knit cuffs.
At the base of the statue, a plaque rests with these words:
If I take the wings of the morning
And swell in the uttermost
parts of the sea,
Even there your hand will lead me
and your right hand hold me fast.
